Vietnam records first death from coronavirus

HANOI, Vietnam – A 70-year-old man from Hoian city’s Minh An ward in Quang Nam province died on Friday morning, registering Vietnam’s first death from the coronavirus disease Covid-19.

The cause of death, according to RFA, was said to be a myocardial infarction, and the patient also suffered from hypertension, heart failure and end-stage chronic renal failure. Heart and respiratory failure had also taken hold due to his Covid-19 infection.

Later, on Friday afternoon the country recorded another coronavirus-related death. According to local media the61-year old man had tested positive in Da Nang, the fifth largest city in the country.

Covid-19 cases began being reported in Da Nang last week for the first time in a little over three months.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said testing in the city had been ramped up to contain the spreading of the disease. Tests are also being taken out on people returning to other parts of the country from Da Nang.

On Friday 45 new cases of coronavirus were reported in Vietnam, the biggest one-day reading in the country. The total number of cases now totals 509, according to the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

The latest batch of new patients, according to VNA, include two cases in Hanoi – a 23-year-old man in Me Tri district and a 76-year-old man in Tay Ho district.
