Dengue cases in NorMin beyond epidemic threshold ‘ DOH
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug. 6 (PIA) — Department of Health Region 10 Director Adriano P. Suba-an said the cases of dengue in the region is beyond epidemic threshold, greater than the number of cases in the last five years combined.
In a press conference, Suba-an said from January 1 to August 3 of this year, Region 10 has recorded and verified a total of 15,095 dengue cases, which is 62.54 percent higher compared to the same period last year.
There were 60 deaths reported with case fatality rate of 0.39 percent with Bukidnon showing the highest number of cases (6,406 cases or 42 percent).
Majority are males (53 percent) and the most common age group affected was one to 10 years old.
According to Suba-an, they are looking into controlling these numbers that it will not go beyond the outbreak threshold.
He said the threshold for case fatality rate is .4 percent and they are looking into bringing it down to .2 percent.
However, as of the meantime, it stands at .39 percent, he said.
In Cagayan de Oro City, a total of 1,557 dengue cases were reported with eight deaths.
Among the barangays, Carmen recorded the highest number of cases at 196 with two deaths.
Sitio Macanhan topped the most number of cases with 32 reported cases.
Suba-an explained that the only way to lower down the number of these cases are people’s participation and heightened information dissemination.
There are so many ways to kill the mosquitoes, and the effective one, he said, is to destroy breeding sites.
These sites can be found in containers that have clean waters just like vases, water catchment in the house and small areas where water is stored openly.
He also urged the public to follow the “4S Strategy”: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; Self-protective measures like using of insect repellants daily and wearing of light colored clothes, long sleeves and long pants; Seek early consultation to the nearest health care facility once signs and symptoms are manifested; Support fogging, spraying and misting only in hotspot areas where increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent and impending outbreak.
